Prevacid

Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Lansoprazole may also be used to treat ulcers due to long-term use of certain pain/anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This medicine works by blocking acid production in the stomach. It may be used in combination with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) to treat certain types of ulcers.

Directions on how to take
Prevacid comes as an extended-release (long-acting) capsule to take it orally. Prevacid usually is taken once a day, before a meal. Take Prevacid exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. The capsule should be swallowed whole. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, Prevacid can be opened, and the granules can be sprinkled on applesauce and swallowed immediately. The granules should not be chewed or crushed. Continue to take Prevacid even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Prevacid without talking to your doctor. Do not chew the food/medication mixture or prepare a supply in advance. Doing so may destroy the drug and/or increase side effects. Potent acid-reducing medicines such as lansoprazole can decrease the effectiveness of sucralfate, as well as other drugs such as the antifungals ketoconazole and itraconazole. If instructed to take any of these medicines while taking lansoprazole, consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the proper timing of each dose.

Warnings and Precautions
Before taking Prevacid, tell your doctor if you ever have liver disease. You may not be able to take Prevacid, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking ampicillin, cilostazol, digoxin, iron, itraconazole, ketoconazole, sucralfate, theophylline, vitamins with iron, vorconizole, or warfarin.

Possible Side Effects
Stop taking Prevacid and seek medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Prevacid and talk to your doctor if you experience; diarrhea, nausea or abdominal pain; dizziness; or headache.

Storage
Store Prevacid at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

More Information
There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activities while taking Prevacid, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
